Adhiyoga Sutras Explained

Daily Adhiyoga Post 109!

==================

Note: Since these daily posts were inspired by Prof. David J Jaroch, and I have completed one cycle of 108 posts. I shall now add his second suggestion that I should explain the Adhiyoga in small amounts. If you want the whole thing, you may read the Adhiyoga Book.

Sutra 1.1: Each and every person is, by nature, in a search of happiness.

I know you know that! But, why did I write this obvious fact in the Adhiyoga Darshan? Yoga Sutras of Patanjali were written 300 years before Christ and they were aimed at a person who is fed up of the human life.

parinamatapsankskaraduhkhairgunavruttivirodhaachcha duhkhameva sarvam vivekinaH... Chapter 2.

In other words, the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali are written for the Removal of Sorrow.

Whereas, the Adhiyoga Sutras are written for the natural and obvious goal of each and every person, which is Happiness. Do you know anyone who is not wanting happiness?

What we are saying is that even the person who is fed up of human life and wanting removal of sorrow is searching for a kind of happiness, which is called Bliss.

Thus, the Adhiyoga Sutra 1.1 establishes the "Adhikari" (the intended audience, a part of Anubandha Chatushtaya) of the Indian Philosophical Work, Darshana. Adhikari for Adhiyoga Darshan is "each and every human being"!

OM ShantiH

Daily Adhiyoga Post 110!

==================

Adhiyoga Sutra 1.2: Depending on the state of the Mind of a person, the happiness is sought through usage of physical senses and/or mental faculty, or going beyond the body and the mind.

All the happiness is happening in the Mind. Therefore, the person whose mental faculty is not sound cannot enjoy generally enjoyable physical experiences including eating (icecream, etc.) or even sex (as you know in case of child abused case of an adult). Thus, while treating a mentally sad person, there is not much point in treating physically such as giving ice cream, or going to nature reserves (though this may have some effect) or giving medications (that affect the brain only, not the mind!)

There are very few people who understand that the happiness through mind and body is not everlasting. Millions talk about happiness of going beyond the mind, such as living in the here and now, making the mind thoughtless, keeping the attention on the breath alone, considering one is Self and not other things, etc. etc. But, in actual practice, they demonstrate they are attached to the happiness of body/mind or they get dissatisfied/unhappy/angry when the body/mind is disturbed.

To go beyond body and mind, the here and now has to be properly executed in such a way that on one hand here and now is completed, but there and then is not created.

OM ShantiH.

Daily Adhiyoga Post 111!

==================

Sutra 1.3: Happiness through physical senses depends on the physical and mental health and fitness.

Actually, the happiness belongs to Mind only. Body is just used to get that happiness whenever Mind has intention that needs the use of the Body. Thus, Mental Health and Fitness are critical. When the Mind is not well, the Healthy and Fit body becomes unusable, not useless.

However, when the Mind needs the Body for obtaining the intended object or objective, a certain amount of Bodily Health and Fitness are needed. Out of these Health is more critical than Fitness. Because, unhealthy and fit body becomes unusable.

Therefore, a real Yoga student should always focus on Mental health and fitness. But, at the same time keep Body healthy and fit.

OM ShantiH.

Daily Adhiyoga Post 112!

==================

Sutra 1.4: Happiness obtained through Mind depends ONLY on mental health and fitness.

Happiness only through Mind? What does that mean?

Actually, all the happiness happens in Mind only. It is that sometimes, body is needed to satisfy the wishes of the Mind to obtain such happiness. For example, Mind tells that I want happiness of eating (meaning tasting!) icecream. So, to make it happen, a good sensation of tongue and sufficient hunger in the body are required, and not only that the message from the tongue should be carried to the brain. The tongue should not be paralyzed!

But, of course, if you want to imagine the icecream and imaginarily eat it, that is also possible. Then you only need a Mind that can properly and strongly imagine. Correct?

Does this sound crazy? No. Yoga Sutras of Patanjali is telling exactly this in the sutra: vishayavatee vaa pravrutti utpannaa manasasthitinibandhini... chapter 1. The mental creation (imagination) of a previously experienced object will help in pacifying the mind, which in turn shall benefit Meditation!

The Yoga Practitioner may do Physical Practices, but should never forget the Mental Aspect. In fact, it is not that you start with Asanas first and then go to Meditation. But, you should start with Meditation first and then do Asanas as needed for what you want to achieve.

Om ShantiH.

Daily Adhiyoga Post 113!

==================

Sutra 1.5: Happiness beyond the senses and Mind depends on the mental health and practice of Abhyasa plus Vairagya. Abhyasa means the practice of To-Dos and Vairagya means abstaining from Not-To-Dos.

Mental Health is of course crucial if you want to go beyond senses and mind. If your Mind is weak, you will always succumb to material pleasures. You need a great mental strength to be able to go beyond senses, and much more strength to go beyond Mind. This is generally obtained by discipline. It does not come automatically. Your Mind of course should be healthy and not suffering from mental illnesses like depression because in this case, the thought of going beyond the mind is impossible. The depressed or unhappy mind constantly dwells on itself as you will notice if you have experience of yourself or of others.

All the discipline is needed to turn the senses inward when one goes beyond the outside material world. Now, first one has to cross the senses that are trying to either go outside for enjoyment, or trying to enjoy the imaginary pleasure inside the mind. Do not you think that this requires heavy discipline?

Similarly, when the senses are transcended, the Mind has to go beyond itself. That means that the Mind should not be used at all for any material things as well as mental formations. But, as you know the Mind is a Monkey. It is so tricky that even a great Yogi does not know his/her mind. They may know the whole Encyclopedia by heart or they may be able to perform great miracles, but the Mind is not known. To go beyond the Mind to reach the Self Realization, one should be able to disconnect with the Material world totally. This is a mental disconnection while one is alive. It is NOT a physical suicide or going away in the forest temporarily.

Whatever is aiding your Spiritual Progress in reality as indicated above (thus excluding any extra sensory perceptions, or any miracles, or such things) should be embraced. This is the real Abhyasa.

But, the problem is that obstacles are always present. Attractions are always present due to the past association. This is all going to delay your spiritual progress. This must be shunned step by step or at once, but permanently.

For material achievement also, such Abhyasa and Vairagya are needed when the expectations or goals are of higher nature, such as becoming a Scientist, or getting Olympic Level Recognition in the Sport, or even becoming a Prime Minister of the Country. What wonder would there be if a very serious Abhyasa and Vairagya are needed for going beyond the senses and the Mind, which are the main basis of any Material experience?

Have you met a person with real Vairagya, in the midst of Gurus in the world today? The world is so attractive that even a Guru can be led to enjoyment. Real Abhyasa and Vairagya are very hard or rare. That is why who are not interested totally avoid it or those who are interested but do not follow it, go on talking about it. But, talking is different from the practice.

Om ShantiH.

Daily Adhiyoga Post 114!

==================

In the Material World, a human being generally seeks happiness through the physical senses as well as the mind. Hence there is a need of physical and mental health.

Many persons think they are in the Spiritual World. But in fact, they are in the material world. They want to enjoy worldly things like good food, at least some property, sex, etc. They think it is legitimate to enjoy these as long as they do it without any violence. For example, they might eat only organically grown vegetarian fruits. But, they definitely wish to enjoy this food while eating it. Or, they might like to attend a musical concert. Going to concert and sitting there needs certain amount of physical health, and enjoying the concert requires mental health.

This health is however not easily available or achieved as it needs effort and this effort is a part of Adhiyoga when done properly.

Daily Adhiyoga Post 115!

==================

Sutra 1.7: In the Spiritual World however, a human being seeks happiness by going beyond the Mind. This practice needs very good Mental Health and application of that Health to go beyond the Mind, and even to stop the Mental Activity totally.

Everyone is intrigued by what exists beyond here and now, even though many people always talk about living in the here and now. Here and now is in the Mind, what is beyond is called Spiritual, for the sake of language.

One knows at the heart that there is something beyond here and now. Those who can afford to go there try for it. Those who are engaged only in the bread and butter go beyond the Mind only during daily sleep, but do not know where they went!

Those who are engaged in the Emotional World here are generally exhausted towards the end. They sometimes feel like going beyond the Mind, but they lack the faith, courage and effort.

Only those who have strong faith, who have trained the Mind and achieved a balanced state of Mind can think of going beyond the Mind. Mind is a self propelled vehicle which cannot be stopped by the body, but itself has to make that decision. When the Mind gets a control on itself, it can go to various places and enjoy those worlds. However, it should only go to the Spiritual World and not other Material World Resorts. It is like some people own a very good quality car, but they use it only to go to the stressful office work, and not for vacation. Similarly, the trained Mind should be used to go to a vacation of Spirituality or vacating the Mind itself.

OM ShantiH

Daily Adhiyoga Post 116!

==================

Sutra 1.8: During the process of obtaining Happiness through any of the situations described earlier, one goes through changes of the higher levels of subtlety of practice and experiences, and transitioning from the lower level goals to higher level goals. Traditionally, the Spiritual Goal is considered the highest, the Mental Goal the medium and the Physical Goal the lowest.

As the happiness occurs on obtaining the desired thing, one tries to obtain a bigger or better thing in some form. If one has worked towards one bedroom house and likes the fact of obtaining the houses, one shall go for a bigger or better house, no doubt. And so on.

If one does not succeed in obtaining the desired thing, one may try harder to get it, or understand the situation better and satisfy themselves with the fact. This is called Santosha. One may even choose to stay unhappy complaining about the situation, but this cannot last for long in order to survive.

However, another development may take place. One may enjoy more subtle things such as poetry, art, etc. as compared to material things like house, ornaments, etc.

Sometimes or in some cases, one develops yearning for knowing oneself, the Spiritual Goal. This may result in Charitable Work, Devotional Practice or Search For Knowledge or Meditation.

Traditionally, Spiritual Goal is considered higher. But in Adhiyoga, we respect all the Goals equally. But even in Adhiyoga, we know that Spiritual Goal is really the highest.

OM ShantiH.

Daily Adhiyoga Post 117!

==================

Sutra 2.1: In the process of life and obtaining happiness, each person has an individual goal.

Does not each person have something in their mind that should happen? Does this happen to only a common person like myself? No, it happens to Swami Vivekananda and even Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa. Of course, each person has a different goal as per their Mental Status which reflects the Spiritual Status too. And, no doubt they become happy when the thing in their mind happens. May be happening and happy-ing come from the same root.

Only in case of Lord Krishna and such, the Happiness and Non-Happiness are not seen, I suppose. That is called Yogeshwar!

OM ShantiH.

Daily Adhiyoga Post 118!

==================

Sutra 2.2: Individual has to take a course of action to reach his/her individual goal. This involves overcoming obstacles, discipline, obtaining resources for the action, forming a goal oriented practice, stability in the practice, revisiting the goal and making modification in the practice when necessary.

How many persons dive into Yoga without proper discipline? 50 percent? No, around 90 percent. They think they will try it for a very short time and see the benefits. Then they find too much discipline is needed for the benefits. Many a practitioners think they are made for Yoga or Yoga is made for them, and they dive into the practice without knowing it is not going to be totally cool. So many obstacles come on the way and then complaining starts which destroys their Yoga, even if the practice continues. Some do not have even as simple resources as a Yoga Mat, and they try to do Yoga exercise on a slippery bedsheet. Some keep a very high goal such as obtaining total focus of Mind, but their practice is so small that it is like eating one banana for the entire day's food, in order to get nourishment. Of course, sometimes the circumstances change and a revelation about one's own situation is clear. Then a modification becomes necessary, else you are going into an unknown valley.

OM ShantiH.

Daily Adhiyoga Post 119!

==================

Sutra: The validity of a given individual goal depends on the background of the individual, the situation of the individual, the time available for the practice, and also the rest taken between the practice periods.

The goal has to be reasonable. Any goal that is beyond the person's means and possibility is only a dream impossible. It cannot give happiness, but only makes the individual tired. In order to obtain the happiness, one should consider one's situation properly and form a goal and above all practice accordingly.

Daily Adhiyoga Post 120!

==================

Sutra 3.1: The Classical Yoga provides practices for Health and Fitness that are necessary for achieving Samadhi (Self Realization) and Kaivalya (Spiritual Liberation), i.e. Spiritual Goal.

One must understand this point well. The Classical Yoga Practices are used for achieving Health and Fitness in today's world. But, they are absolutely not necessary for health as well as fitness of the body. In fact, they cannot provide extreme Health and Fitness of the Body. Of course, they are very useful for the mental health and fitness. But, the Classical Yoga Practices are meant to achieve spiritual goal, in the first place.

OM ShantiH.

Daily Adhiyoga Post 121!

==================

Sutra 3.2: Adhiyoga System, on the other hand, is a system for achieving an individual goal, whether material, spiritual or mixed.

An individual is following his/her own destiny according to his/her own Karma, even as per the Classical Yoga System which aims at Samadhi and Kaivalya. The individual must resolve the Karma for sure. Individual Goal is based on this Karma. So, individual goal cannot be ignored or skipped to jump to Classical Yoga Goal. Only when the individual goal matches the Classical Yoga Goal, the individual will take up Classical Yoga Practices.

Daily Adhiyoga Post 122!

==================

Sutra 3.4; Adhiyoga System attempts to correct the mistaken practices prevalent in the Classical Yoga System and the Yoga Community to-date. It provides a new system of practicing and teaching Yoga to achieve individual goals.

The Classical Yoga System has practices that can be called grave mistakes. For example, the classical yoga system advises Sexual Celibacy. This practice is almost impossible in today's world. While the actual celibacy can be extremely powerful, when it becomes a great challenge, it can even lead to Psychological problems. Similarly, the Classical Yoga provides some terrible cleansing methods such as Dhauti. These methods are extremely dangerous in general and are totally unnecessary, because the body cleanses itself when proper habits of diet, exercise and rest are observed. These proper habits are must for health of the body as well as of the mind.

OM ShantiH.

Daily Adhiyoga Post 123!

====================

Sutra 4.1: Body is an aggregate of all parts of the Human System that can be currently perceived using the five senses of hearing, seeing, touching, smelling and tasting.

If you are not able to perceive something using these senses, that is not a body part. Therefore, all the body parts can be checked for various properties using Physics/Chemistry or material sciences. Mind can never be checked using Material Sciences, such as Medical Science.

OM ShantiH.

Daily Adhiyoga Post 124!
====================

Sutra 4.2: Mind is that part of the Human System that is perceived for sure, but not using the five senses. Mind is perceived by Mind only, and is also called Sixth Sense.

Five senses can neither let you know your own Mind or anyone else's Mind. Your own Mind is known to You, your Mind. To know another person's Mind, you have to do too much work. It is called Para Chitta JnanaM. pratyayasya parachittajnanam... Chapter 3, Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. But, once you know your Mind, you can help others to improve their Mind. This is the real Psychologist.

Om ShantiH.

Daily Adhiyoga Post 125!
==================

Purusha is the essential identity of a human being that cannot be perceived by the five senses and the Mind.

How strange is that! We cannot perceive our own identity? How is that possible? Did you try this? Is your identity changing by living in here and now? If your identity is changing, then you are not there. Think you have a different birth certificate each time you need. Think you have a different name each time you need to tell it. The fact that we cannot perceive our identity has intrigued the human beings for ages and it led to the feeling that permanent happiness may be in realizing this identity!

OM ShantiH.

Daily Adhiyoga Post 126!
==================
Sutra 4.4: Purusha is constant with time, whereas the body and the mind are constantly changing.

You know that you were born as a baby without any name. All your cells and mind has changed over years totally. But, it is still You who has remained You!

OM ShantiH.

Daily Adhiyoga Post 127!
====================

Sutra 4.5: When a person acts with attachment to fruits of action, that action creates Karma. Purusha attached to Karma gets bound with Body-Mind-Spirit Complex.

Each individual is always performing an action. Is it not? Of course you will do any action with a purpose. Is it not? But, the fact is that the purpose may come partially successful, totally successful, or totally unsuccessful. You do not know what will happen. You should enjoy the action with a purpose. But, do not get too much attached to the purpose becoming fully successful, which is the Fruit of that Action. Otherwise, your actions will never end and you will go through the myriads of births containing sorrows. Body-Mind complex is never without sorrows@

Om ShantiH

Daily Adhiyoga Post 128!
==================

Sutra 4.6: All of the human actions require Mind for their performance. Some of them also need Body for their execution. These can be called Physical actions.

Everything related to a Human Living occurs in the Mind. mana eva manushyanam karanam bandha-mokshayoH.  (Mind is the reason for the bondage as well as the liberation for Humans). It is the desires or thoughts in the Mind that is driving the human actions. Of course, some of these desires need body to execute them, such as eating an ice-cream. Then, the body parts come into picture, I mean into action. These are the Physical actions. Without physical actions, someone may be able to enjoy and perform the actions. This is called vikaranabhava ... tato manojavitam vikaranabhavaH pradhanajayashcha ... Yoga Sutras Chapter 3.

Om ShantiH.

Daily Adhiyoga Post 129!
==================

Sutra 4.7: The other actions require mainly Mind and very little Body. These can be called Mental actions.

Without the Body, a person does not exist as a person. He exists only as a Ghost (this concept is not to be discussed here!). But, many times, the usage of Body is mostly involuntary and not a purposeful action. These actions are done inside the Mind such as planning, making a poetry, etc. Remember, if you want to develop the Mind, you need to perform Mental Actions or Mental Relaxations, NOT Physical actions.

OM ShantiH

Daily Adhiyoga Post 130!
==================
Sutra 4.8: Whereas, some actions require Body and Mind with equal intensity.
Look at the bottom picture. You will know you need Mental Focus as well as Bodily Fitness and Health. How about astronaut or simply a badminton player?
OM ShantiH.

Daily Adhiyoga Post 131!
==================

Sutra 4.9: Therefore, achievement of individual goals requires varying amounts and types of physical, mental, and spiritual health and fitness.

This is extremely important to note as you can realise. Individual goals are different, they require different body parts and mental faculties. Therefore, naturally they need different health and fitness considerations. Also, the situations of all individuals are different. On the top of that all individuals desire different things in life. God or Nature has created all individuals with different constitutions, but with common elements. So, naturally we need to have different Yoga Practices for all individuals with common elements. Does that sound different?

OM ShantiH.

Daily Adhiyoga Post 132!
==================

Sutra 4.10: The Adhiyoga System provides the means for obtaining Physical, Mental and Spiritual health and fitness necessary for obtaining the individual goal.

As mentioned earlier each goal and each individual need a varying type and amount of health and fitness to achieve his/her own goal. This is exactly what the AYS provides. Thus, each individual is given an individualised instruction and practice to be followed. Thus, their happiness through the goal is assured. Later, the goal may get updated or upgraded, so does the instruction and practice in AYS.

OM ShantiH.

Daily Adhiyoga Post 133!
==================

Sutra 4.11: Classical Yoga Practice is not mandatory for physical and mental health and fitness. It is meant for Spiritual Health and Fitness.

You have to understand that Spirituality in Yoga is different from Spirituality in Religions. Spirituality is to go towards Self Realization (NOT Self as a Person, but as a Soul or Self apart from Body/Mind) and then Self Liberation (from Body/Mind existence). Classical Yoga Practice is meant for this Spirituality. Any physical and mental benefits you get from it are only Side Benefits, not the main ones. It is perfectly OK to use the Yoga for physical and mental benefits, but those benefits can be achieved through non-Yoga practices, and sometimes even in an easier manner. While achieving physical and mental benefits from the Yoga Practice, the real meaning of Yoga should never be lost, at least in the knowledge or information sense.

OM ShantiH.

Daily Adhiyoga Post 134!
====================

Sutra 5.1: Ishwara, also called Parameshwara, is the Purusha that exists indpendent of the Universe, but reflects into each sentient being as a Purusha. Individual Purusha either gets bound to the Universe or gets liberated through Yoga Practice. Ishwara is never bound to the Universe though it exists in the Universe.

Firstly, one has to take the term Purusha here to mean something that is beyond the Body/Mind complex. Body is made from the matter, so Purusha is also beyond the Matter. Thus, each individual being has a Purusha as described in the Fourth Chapter. We know the Individual Purusha gets bound due to the Karma attachment.

Now, the question arises as to whether there is anything beyond Body/Mind Complex, Material world and also Individual Purushas? Does not our common logic indicate that there has to be or at least there may be something that is beyond these? That something is Ishwara, mean supreme owner. Wara - Supreme. Isha - Owner.

OM ShantiH.

Daily Adhiyoga Post 135!
==================

Sutra 5.2: Prakruti is the Universe made up of Sattva, Rajas and Tamas. Prakruti consists of all the Sentient and Insentient matter except Purushas and Ishwara.

Purusha is beyond Body and Mind Complex in a living being. Parameshwara or Ishwara is the Purusha who never got into Body and Mind Complex. What is then left? Well, we still have Body and Mind Complex and insentient matter like stones, water, etc. And, actually Body is made from this insentient matter by adding energies to it, but the body becomes a being due to Purusha. Does that make sense?

OM ShantiH

Daily Adhiyoga Post 136!
==================

Sutra 5.3: Ishwara is as if the owner and the creator of the Universal Prakruti and Purushas.

The question arises whether Prakruti and Purushas are created and owned by someone? Prakruti is changing always, this we know. But, the change is systematic and some changes can even be effected by a human being such as ice to water, or water to steam, etc. Similarly, Purusha is sometimes in a given Body-Mind complex and then at least the Body vanishes. It seems when any human being is born with a Body-Mind complex, certain characteristics are decided. Even if we give the reasons of DNA, there is something that formulates this DNA. Therefore, it is logical to assume that Ishwara is the Boss of the Universe and Purushas. Defintiely there is NO harm in deducting this.

OM ShantiH.

Daily Adhiyoga Post 137!
==================

Sutra 5.4: Purusha is bound to the Universe by Karma, the accumulated desire. On reaching the Kaivalya, the Purusha of a perfected Yogi is liberated from the universal binding with the Prakruti, the material world.

It is impossible for a human being to stay without doing any action or work. One cannot even sleep for a prolonged time. Once awake, he/she is compelled to do action. Of course, some action depends on the innate desires and abilities. But, a human being has a freedom of action also. Whatever action is done is always associated with some desire. Desire-less action is impossible. Desire is not the problem. Problem is getting hyper or hypo when the desire is not satisfied. When this happens, the desire is not resolved. Now, this accumulation of desire causes further action and binding with the Universe. Thus, the Purusha gets permanently enslaved in the material world. But, a Yogi can perform practices that will either make the actions without getting enslaved or not having the desire at all. This is the liberation, while alive called Jeevanmukti or without living called videha mukti..

OM ShantiH.

Daily Adhiyoga Post 138!
==================

Sutra 6.1: Health is a state of Well Being. It can be physical, mental, spiritual or any combination of these.

Interestingly, Wellbeing results in Well-feeling. But, Well-feeling can be induced without Well-being! How? Take a cup of coffee, a bowl of ice-creat, or hot shower, etc. Also, physical Wellbeing
does not always indicate Mental one. And, vice a versa. They may be related, but they are different. Well, you decide what you want and what you really have.

OM ShantiH

Daily Adhiyoga Post 139!
==================
Sutra 6.2: Optimal Well-being depends on two primary factors. Firstly, it depends on the Optimal Purity of the system at its most basic level. Secondly, it depends on the adequate supply of Only Essential Needs of the system. When the system does not remain remain clean by the normal processes, the system itself initiates a rapid cleansing process, called Disease. Disease the cure!

We can only talk of Optimal Well-being. Perfect Well-being is impossible. Constantly, there are forces in action, external and internal that try to sabotage your well being. Your system itself, however, tries to maintain its sanity as a part of the effort to survive. Every living structure always tries to survive and not destroy itself as wrongly stated by the term Autoimmuune. During this survival, the system has to remove the unwanted and take in the needed. However, when the unwanted clogs the system, the system starts rapid cleansing called acute Disease process. It is not the disease that needs to be cured, but the process of clogging and not supplying the essential needs.

OM ShantiH.

Daily Adhiyoga Post 140!
==================

Sutra 6.3: Food is defined as anything taken into the system such as air, water, eatables, thoughts, emotions, etc. Nutrition is the process of converting the Food into the System. Without Nutrition, all Food is useless, however good it may be.

Did you know that Air is the maximum food a human takes each day for forming and sustaining the Body? And, the next comes Water. And, thoughts taken from outside definitely go into formation of the Mind. So, you have to work on Air more than Water and eatable, on Water more than eatables. And, the Mind is the most powerful part of the System. So, you have to be very careful of what to put in there.

But, even if you took utmost care, the job is not complete. In fact, job is only minimally started. Nutrition is the process that makes up your System. This process depends on many a factors. And, those are the ones you have to work on the MOST!

Does that sound fun?

OM ShantiH.

Daily Adhiyoga Post 141!
==================

Sutra 6.4: Nutrition is very inefficient during the process of Disease. Therefore, the good that is good during the Health is mostly inappropriate during the Disease. For the efficiency of the Cleansing initiated via the Disease process, all other functions should be minimised. This is called Rest.

Are you given a nutritious diet during your illness, either in the Hospital or at Home? Stop it. You need no diet, you need Rest. But, does Rest mean lying on the bed only? No, no, no. Rest includes not eating. And, most of the Diseases are caused by wrong items and process of Eating.

OM ShantiH

Daily Adhiyoga Post 142!
==================
Sutra 6.5: Cure is a result of Caring. The best Care in the most sickness is "To Do Nothing", but intelligently. Sometimes, we need a surgical intervention, or a guidance from the one who has knowledge as well as his/her own experience of Health.

It is a wrong idea, most of the time, that we became well because we took some medication or we did some therapy, etc. The process of becoming well is always in process 24x7x365 throughout the life. This process is determined by the Nature, God, or Biology, or whatever similar name you may give. This process does not depend on any non-Food item, or non-natural special movement, etc. So, basically nothing needs to be done.

Sometimes, there are obstacles for the natural process to function. For example, breathing is already going on. But, if there is a blockage in the respiratory canal, the oxygen will be less and the health building is reduced, resulting in a major sickness. In this case, an external intervention, sometimes with a corresponding compromise, is needed, such as clearing of the blockage in this case.

When a person gets sick, he/she is very likely to get fearsome. Actually, lack of knowledge generally causes fear in any field. This time a really knowledgeable person can help. However, that person should have knowledge and also experience of Health. Otherwise, the knowledge may be only theoretical.

Millions of people become sick each day, and majority of them become well regardless of presence or absence of any treatment. This includes people in poor nations, unfortunately called as Third World, and also solders on the battlefield.

OM ShantiH.

Daily Adhiyoga Post 143!
==================
Sutra 6.6: Poison or Toxin is anything that a system cannot use while in a healthy state. Anything that is not useful in a healthy state can never be useful in a disease process. However, often that is useful in a healthy state cannot be used by the system in a disease process.

If you eat a piece of plastic, would you think that system will somehow use it by converting it into a biological structure. If fact, if you force a piece of plastic into the body, via mouth or via skin, etc., the body will try to throw it. Agreed?

Same thing happens when you eat Table Salt that you put each day in your cooking. Body will throw it as it cannot be utilized. Only organic salts, such as in vegetables, can be utilized.

During the Disease Process, body is already trying to clean up the existing mess. If you add something that body throws out during healthy state, what would happen? Just think about it.

Now, Mango is a very good nourishing food. Would you take it when you have a diarrohea or dyssentry? Therefore, when you are really sick, do NOT eat nourishing food. Just take rest.

OM ShantiH.

Sutra 6.7: Medicine when introduced into the system leads to the removal of the symptoms of a disease, but never to removal of its cause. In this process, Medicine provides a temporary relief from the discomforts from the Disease, but at the cost of Health, mainly of the Nervous System.

There is a sufficiently long time duration (before the Disease occurrs) when a person was not taking Medicine and not having Disease. This means Medicine is not an essential element of Human Life. Otherwise, one should continue the Medication throughout the life.

Why the hell one takes Medicine then?

Because, one is feeling horrible. And, when the Medicine is taken, one feels better.

But, how does one feel better?

Medicine changes the nervous system or human physiological process in such a way that previous discomfort is not felt. It does this in various ways!

Sounds great. So, what is the problem with this?

The problem is the discomfort is removed by not healing the body, but by masking the symptoms. In this process, an additional load of toxin is added to the body for future disposal. This process slowly screws up the body's physiology introducing new diseases.

Does this mishap occurs sometimes?

Nope. It occurs always!

Why then people take Medication?

Because, they do not want to suffer the symptoms. They think that removal of symptoms is return of Health. A major ignorance, a costly one, but gives a temporary relief.

But, what about natural medicine, what about Ayurvedic Medication, what about Homeopathy, or Yoga Medicine?

All of them do the same damn thing, some are evil, some are bad, and some are mild but at the same time slow.

OM ShantiH.

Sutra 6.8: As a matter of fact, all of us are already practicing Health as each atom of us is striving for wellbeing each moment. However, we need to take up the effective practices that efficiently lead to Optimal Wellbeing.

While you are not aware of it, or even while you are screwing it up with junk food and other bad habits, the System by nature is trying to survive by maintaining its well being. This gives you only the possible amount of Wellbeing compatible with your Life Style. But, that is NOT called Healthy Person. Healthy person wants Optimal Wellbeing, and has to strive for it as the Psychology has been tampered with for long.

OM ShantiH

Sutra 6.9: When the effective Health Practices are discarded, the result is a lack of Well Being - a state called Disease. Disease is also a kind of ease or Well Being, only in the negative sense. Disease points to the Real Health.

Suppose, I hold a pen in my hand, and I can see it. Then, somehow that pen is removed from my hand. Then, I can know the absence of the previously present Health. Disease is nothing but a lack of Health. It is pointing to the Health, same as to the previous presence of the pen.

Sutra 6.10: Health is obtained only through Healthful Habits. The Adhiyoga System provides means for obtaining All kinds of Health.

Health is a result of following healthy life style. It is not something that can be voluntarily created and sold or purchased.No one else can give you Health, but only Health Education. Adhiyoga System educates you in all aspects of Health and thus becomes important for you in whatever status you are in.

OM ShantiH

Sutra 6.11: The bulk of Yoga Practice focuses on Mental Health, which consists of Mental Peace and Steady Intellect. Physical Health, often misunderstood as the Health should be utilised for attaining Mental Health. Spiritual Health is the presumed Goal, Mental Health is the means, and the Physical Health is the aid.

Physical, Mental and Spiritual Health may be connected with each other, but they are different for sure. The connection should be seen bottom up, meaning physical to spiritual and NOT the otherwise. Similarly, we should not see how Vedic Knowledge is proven by the Material Sciences, which are of lower category. Material Sciences without Mental Health and Spiritual Health have screwed up the world, as is obvious today. Effect of Physical Phenomenon last temporarily, that of Mental Phenomenon lasts much longer, and only the Spiritual Phenomenon lasts for ages. That is why Body dies in each incarnation, Mind dies after many incarnations, and Spirit never dies.

OM ShantiH.

Sutra 6.12: Means of Maximum Possible Physical Health are Pure Air, Pure Water, Biologically Correct Food, Internal and External Cleanliness, Adequate Exercise, Adequate Rest and Sleep, Adequate Sunshine, Right Temperature, and Emotional Balance.

You will surely find that all these factors are involved in making the Body. And, some of them are more important than others for the Body. For example, Air is the Most Important. Thus, for the one who wants the best possible Bodily Health, he/she should try for the best Air, and not for the best organic food. How many people consider Air in their formula?

I am moving to Italy/Austria soon!

OM ShantiH.

Sutra 6.13: Means of maximum possible Mental Health are Adequate Physical Health, Steady Breathing, Controlled Sensual Tendencies, Concentration and Meditation.

Peace and Steadiness of Mind defines the Mental Health. When you want to obtain it, Physical Health should not drag you down from Mental Practices. The first and easy practice is the one that connects Body with the Mind, which is the Breathing. Once that is addressed, your Sensual Tendencies would not let you stay steady, they need to be controlled judiciously. Now, if you are interested in any higher mental achievements, concentration of Mind is going to be the Key. But, if you want to get spiritual progress, the Meditation is must.

OM ShantiH.

Sutra 6.14: The means of Perfect Spiritual Health are adequate physical health, adequate mental health and devotional surrender to Ishwara.

Physical health and mental health, when neglected create obstruction and distraction in the process of Spiritual Practice. And, Spiritual Practice culminates in the Total Surrender to Ishwara. When one realises that Ego cannot be eradicated by any other means, one enters the devotion and finds that only by total surrender to Ishwara, the ego can be eradicated and this is a must before Self Realisation is possible.

OM ShantiH.

Sutra 6.15: Perfection of Physical Health is impossible, and therefore, Death results. Perfection in Mental Health is impossible, and therefore Knowledge remains incomplete. Perfection is possible only in the Spiritual Health and that results in the complete surrender to the will of Ishwara.
Trying for Perfection in Physical Health is like wiping the sweat on the skin with the expectation that no more sweating will occur. Trying for Perfection in Mental Health is extremely stressful, resulting in Mental Problems!!! On the other hand, if you can truly surrender to the will of Ishwara, the Spiritual Health Perfection occurs. Even then, most people try for the first two.
Om ShantiH.

==================
Sutra 6.16: Perfection of Spiritual Health, total surrender to the will of Ishwara, state of Yoga (union), state of permanent joy, all these are identical. In a way, that is the purpose of Human Life.

Not only everyone wants a joy, but they want a permanent joy. This happens when the Ego is totally eradicated, through the surrender to Ishwara.

OM ShantiH
